Modern treatments for natural curls are on the rise.
December 29, 2014

Sometimes Mother Nature needs a little nudge in the right direction. At least that is what we have surmised after listening to our client feedback over the last several years. Going ‘au naturel’ has become a major hair trend for curly and wavy textured clients. It started several years ago and has been gaining speed ever since. Natural in both the esthetic, in that clients desire their curls and waves to look and feel natural, soft and modern and also natural in the sense of avoiding harsh chemical approaches to achieving or augmenting their curls and waves. This most definitely posed as a welcome challenge for me as a hair product creator to create a new category of products and services to meet their needs. But I also saw this as a huge opportunity to not only help our clientele achieve the hair of their hair dreams but also as a way to reinvent the way we approach curly and wavy hair from both a technology standpoint and from the salon service perspective. Prior to this revelation, we as hair professionals were pretty much stuck between what I saw as two somewhat limiting choices. Either create or alter curly or wavy hair with a chemical application or to remedy or enhance the texture by coating the outside of the hair with softening agents, resins or silicones. I also saw these restrictive choices as a huge roadblock when it came to meeting the esthetic demand for natural feeling, soft, defined, modern looking curly or wavy hair. In the year 2014 we don’t want curly or wavy hair to take on the persona of curly and wavy hair circa 1985. So somewhat akin to a hybrid car, we brought to fruition a new thought process in hair care technology that meets this ever growing marketplace demand. We call it Philip Pelusi Texture Management. This newly created range of in-salon services and at-home products represents our new paradigm to treating curly or wavy hair, not only as a way to meet marketplace demands but also as a way to open never-before-created business opportunities, all while helping our clients love their hair in the process. The concept of Philip Pelusi Texture Management has been in place both in my salon chain and also in our Philip Pelusi Concept Product Salons across the country. I am happy to say we have received rave reviews from both stylists and their clients. This overwhelming positive feedback includes everything from better curl and wave definition, shine, less frizz, no harsh chemical exposure and greatly improved hair condition and color retention. And all without harsh chemicals without formaldehyde or formaldehyde derivatives of any kind. Philip Pelusi Texture Management is a combination of both innovative in-salon treatment services where we apply a regimen containing specialized natural and organic ingredients that penetrate deeply into the client’s hair, altering hydrogen and salt bonds in the hair that support its keratin structure, thereby continually “managing” its texture throughout the process instead of permanently changing it with harsh chemical treatments. This professional treatment is coupled with a revolutionary at-home product regimen that contains similar ingredients that continue to reinforce the texture management process that was performed in the salon. These advancements in curl, wave and frizz control bridge the gap between science and organics. Clients get improved natural curls and waves, without harsh chemicals, as opposed to one that looks manufactured. Our texture management technology also supports the fast-growing trend towards achieving superlative texture through natural and/or organic means. I created two heat-activated products in-salon service treatment products; Tela Beauty Organics Phyto-Keratin Smoothing Treatment Blow Out for smoothing texture andTela Beauty Organics Girls Who Love Curls for enhancing and defining curls. Neither produce permanently-altered hair texture because they do not open the cuticle and so their effects do not permanently last in the hair. They were not meant to. The positive trade-off is that clients get more flexibility with their style as they are not locked into any one texture, and they are not compromising the condition as the regimen is helping to keep their hair intact and actually improving its condition. Shine, manageability and even color retention are enhanced. These treatments work in the hair like a demi-permanent hair color in that they last about 4 to 6 weeks. Since the PH of these in-salon texture management products are between 5 and 6, the natural pH of undamaged hair, there is no lifting of the cuticle, making it perfect to recommend to be applied immediately following their color service. Plus, the actual application is so easy they make these services uncomplicated to recommend and execute in the salon. I designed these products with No Formaldehyde, Aldehydes, or Formaldehyde Derivatives, No harsh chemicals, No irritating or harmful fumes or odors, Non-toxic, No unpleasant odors. They are Sulfate Free, Paraben Free, and Dimethicone-free and utilize an Allergen Free Fragrance. Because these in-salon service products don’t alter the hair’s chemistry they actually leave hair stronger rather than weakening its internal structure as do harsh chemical perms relaxers and straighteners. They are also gentle to the skin and thus safe for the stylist as well as clients. Oneof the biggest benefits is that clients are not damaging their hair fabric and even more-so improving it with the ultra-conditioning ingredients in these products. The Tela Beauty Organics Phyto-Keratin Smoothing Treatment Blow Out formula contains 85% Certified Organic treatment ingredients OrganicReishi Mushroom, Sprouted Soy, Red Sage and Burdock to help to improve keratinization, maintain strong hair fibers and help protect against damage and color fadage. It also contains our Philip Pelusi Phyto-Keratin Micro-emulsion of natural moisture-based plant derived amino acids and natural fruit acids that penetrate and further penetrate under the influence of the steam that is generated during hot ironing. This is the first smoothing treatment to use active steam to deliver significant smoothing while conditioning. This reinforces the keratin's rearranged bonds that are pulled into a more-smooth configuration during hot ironing and while doing so deeply conditions with the Phyto-Keratin Micro-emulsions in the formula. The bonds that are rearranged are not hair’s stronger disulfide bonds making the formula super gentle and conditioning to the hair. We recently discovered natural and organic alternatives to Dimethicone, the silicone derivative routinely used to reduce frizz. These “silicones” are formulated as a blend of volatile and non-volatile silicones that coat the surface of the hair, providing shine, comb-ability and frizz management, but also can leave hair feeling greasy and limp. When delivered by the Philip Pelusi Phyto-Keratin Micro-emulsion, Certified Organic Lavender and Baobab oils penetrate into and through hair’s damaged cuticle, providing the lubricity, shine and frizz reduction in a virtually weightless treatment. Our Tela Beauty Organics Girls Who Love Curls Anti-Frizz Curl Enhancing Treatment formula contains 85% Certified Organic treatment ingredients including Organic Reishi Mushroom, Marshmallow Root, Mountain Lady bell, Plantain and Solomons Seal to help improve the moisture content deep within the hair fiber and help protect against damage and color fadage. Quinoa, also in this product, is a complete protein grain that helps reinvent curly and wavy hair by locking in spring and definition to curly and wavy hair while it naturally strengthens, repairs, provides shine. It contains all 8 essential amino acids that bind moisture, provide nourishment and protect hair from environmental exposure, leaving hair smoother and silkier. Tela Beauty Organics Girls Who Love Curls Anti-Frizz Curl Enhancing Treatmentis not a curl creator but a curl enhancer, de-frizzer, definer and curl rejuvenating treatment ingredient in one. It penetrates hair deeply under the influence of the steam that is generated during curling iron hot styling and uses the active steam to create sculpted curl definition while de-frizzing and conditioning. Both formulas also contain our proprietary micro-emulsion of ingredients such as our Patent Pending Hydro-Charged Pelusi Ceramide Complex. This potent strengthening and moisture-binding plant ceramide complex helps repair damaged sites in hair fabric with is lipid hydration system to dramatically restore hair to its healthier state, leaving hair feeling renewed, stronger, silky, shiny and lustrous. This proprietary ceramide complex penetrates deeply into hair's inner structure to strengthen and reconstitute with essential moisturizing factors. Replacing these lipids makes hair appear shiny and lowers porosity for better protection against heat and chemical damage. Also purposefully both formulas contain Organic Aloe and Lavender help sooth scalp and smooth the hair while binding protective weightless moisture. Additional organic treatment ingredients include the hair strengtheners, smoothers and hydrators Organic Sugar Cane and Sugar Maple. Tela Beauty At Home And because we are managing texture, not altering it permanently, the client will maintain their hair with the proper selection of Tela Beauty Organics System at-home treatments including one of the two at-home support products mentioned earlier. They areTela Beauty Organics Smoother Operator for supporting smoother hair andTela Beauty Organics Curls of My Dreams for supporting better defined and less frizzy curls. They contain a similar ingredient content as their in-salon counterparts but in a user friendly, less concentrated version to help continue to reinforce the treatments performed in the salon. Also one of the best aspects we discovered with Philip Pelusi Texture Management is that it can be customized during the process of repeat applications. Everyone’s texture is different even within the curly and wavy category. So the stylist can consult with their guest, analyze the hair and then decide how frequently their client’s needs the full in-salon service or perhaps alternate it with our quicker flash-treatment version. The faster the hair grows, the coarser the texture and even the frequency of shampooing, the more “management” needed. Also, after several applications over time, the client can be put on a maintenance plan with less frequent applications. And with repeat services the benefits to texture, condition and color are cumulative. We recommend the product be applied to both new growth and to previously treated hair to reap these substantial benefits. Whatever Tela Beauty Organics Texture Management Treatment service and maintenance system the stylist creates for their wavy and curly clientele, we have found not only the benefits of additional salon revenues but answer to the question Mother Nature forgot to answer.
